LOS NUMEROS
I'm getting mail from everywhere - from US and foreign monitors,
alike - and the message is the same. Numbers are on the rise.
From England, from Norway, from California, from Virginia - and
numerous spots in between - folks are hearing more numbers, more
often and on more frequencies than they've ever noted in the
past.
They take any of the previously documented formats - 4D, 5D, 5L,
live, taped, synthesized, CW cut numbers - you name it. And
they're pretty brash, if you ask me. The recent appearance of
CW numbers on WWCR's daytime *and* nighttime frequencies of
7520 and 15690 kHz were particularly odd. The nighttime broad-
cast interrupted Tom Valentine's "Radio Free America", and the
daytime transmission walked all over Glenn Hauser's "World of
Radio." NASWA Editor Tom Sundstrom happened to be listening to
the World of Radio broadcast and managed to capture the following:
Category 3, Topic 9
Message 72 Fri Jul 12, 1991
T.SUNDSTROM [Tom-W2XQ-NJ] at 18:48 EDT
At 2140 today (12 July) on 15690, while listening to World of
Radio on WWCR, a high-speed code numbers station came on and ran
to 2149 UT. Much stronger than WWCR, it was better than 30 db/9
here. The text was:
476 (repeated about 100 times) IS E TT05 135 44 44 S5 57819
67819 T7399 1T917 43967 91T1T 31158 45819 17853 33823 82615
25433 88868 5T426 15T49 2T967 236T4 17142 T2931 685T9 41T56
T3264 22639 49935 471T3 69213 5357T 89452 17579 T6511 29473
T9559 T58T2 11496 171T4 846T1 67984 53938 17415 62232 39753
85751 3662T 77798 65T32 = = 135 135 44 EU4 T T T T
T = 0. The numbers beginning with T7399 and ending with 65T32
were repeated twice. The first two numbers 57819 and 67819 were
each sent once, as was the final segment beginning with the
first "=" sign.
Any ideas? I had the M-7000 cranked on, but it doesn't read
out the code speed. My guess it was 30 wpm or better except for
the four trailing T's which were hand-typed.
Many of the CW stations that broadcast in this format are of
Cuban origin. "Numbers Factsheet" columnist Don Schimmel recently
received a letter from an anonymous contributor who had intercepted
a similar logging - which he had managed to decrypt. The concept
used was that of a simple substitution cipher, which was relatively
easy to break.
More on this in the August edition of The A*C*E.
HM' E-MAIL RECEPTION REPORT OF THE MONTH
To: HAVANAMOON
From: patrik
Subject: Numeros on 9958
Date: Wed, 17 Jul 91 19:48:55 PDT
Hi there, HM. Just a note to tell you that the 4-D SS YL I reported
last month on 9958 is still going strong tonite (0230 Thursday 7-18-91).
Parallel to _6840_, which I had not realized last month.
Xmission starts with several long tones right at 0230, then staight
into 4-D groups, with no group count or anything. Is this typical
behavior of 4-D SS stations? I always thought there were additional
indicators at the start of both 4-D and 5-D broadcasts, but I'm not
sure of anything anymore <grin>.
Weird life schedules have kept me away from the Sat. Nite Portal fun,
but I hope to be back on soon. See ya later.
/Patrick Crumhorn
Patrick - This station first turned up about a year ago - its
format has been consistently the same. It appears to parallel
some peculiar modulated CW transmissions in format, although
the transmission schedule in terms of both time and frequency
are different.
An interesting observation - these transmissions have been
definitively tracked to the Remington NCS site. They also
appear to be relayed on via microwave.

DID YOU KNOW . . .
. That Remington and Warrenton (those 3-letter agency communications
sites that are often spoken in the same breath as if they were
really the same site "Warrenton/Remington" are really two separate
installations?
. That more than one numbers broadcast has been positively
tracked to these sites?
THE LAST WORD, WITH KRISTIN KAYE
A new chapter in the RNI Story. Since the last issue of A*C*E,
RNI suffered a much ballyhooed and noisy mass resignation of
many on-air personalities as a result of many longstanding
personal differences. The new RNI is different - much more a
platform for the leftist politics of Pirate Joe Ferraro and
Allan Weiner than the rollicking alternative it had come to
be.
At this writing, many of those who left with such a bang have
come back to the station, although the yet unresolved bad
blood has resulted in at least one unpleasant broadcast which
had no place on the airwaves, if you ask me.
RNI is still with us. And that's good. If you don't like
their politics or their programming, you don't have to listen.
But once again, if you ask me, that's what alternative radio
really is all about.
